What is MCT oil?
MCT oil, extracted from coconuts, is a natural oil full of vitamins. It is a stable oil that does not irritate or oxidize quickly. MCT oil hydrates, softens and restores the skin and is therefore ideal for dry, red and irritated skin. But also mature skin and skin with spots and impurities can benefit greatly from this.
MCT stands for Medium Chain Triglyceride. Triglyceride is a fatty acid. Medium Chain means that the fatty acids have a medium chain. Most fats have a long chain.
MCT oil consists mainly of Caprylic acid (M8) and Capric acid (M10). Caprylic acid has a purifying effect, nourishes the skin, counteracts irritation, works as an antioxidant.
What is the difference between MCT oil and coconut oil?
Both oils are extracted from coconuts, but there is a difference between the oils.
MCT oil is produced by a process in which the medium chain triglycerides (MCTs) are separated from the long chain triglycerides (LCTs). Coconut oil contains both MCTs and LCTs, so it contains multiple types of fatty acids.
MCT oil is odorless unlike coconut oil, which makes it a good choice for use as a carrier oil. The scent of regular coconut oil can overpower the scent of essential oil. MCT is also a lighter, less greasy oil than coconut oil.
Where coconut oil can sometimes be quite hard, MCT oil is liquid. Very handy, so you don't have to heat it before using it.
How is MCT oil made?
MCT oil is extracted by distillation. The coconut oil is melted and then cooled slowly. This process can take a few hours. The oil is deliberately cooled slowly because the different types of fatty acids in the oil solidify at different temperatures. This allows the long-chain fatty acids to be removed, leaving the MCT oil.
What are the benefits of MCT oil?
MCT oil has very good properties for the skin:
-
It helps hydrate the skin and is therefore ideal for dry skin.
-
Helps to restore the skin and soothe irritated, flaky skin.
-
Helps reduce pimples and blemishes.
-
Does not occlude the skin and is non-comedogenic.
-
Restores mature skin and helps with early wrinkles.
Want soft, shiny hair? MCT oil can also be of great help.
How do you use MCT oil?
-
Use MCT oil as a facial cleanser, it removes make-up effortlessly and cleanses the skin well.
-
Use MCT oil as a conditioner to help eliminate tangles.
-
Use as a mouthwash for fresh breath and to strengthen gums (oil pulling).
The oil is also ideal for use in various DIYs because it is liquid and odorless. Think of DIY ointment, cream or hair mask.
Combine with another plant oil, such as Jojoba oil or Grapeseed oil. When combining, use 10% - 50% Jojoba oil.
