    What is COSGARD (GEOGARD® 221)?

    What is Cosgard (Geogard® 221)?

Cosgard is also known as Geogard ® 221 and protects your homemade cosmetics against a broad spectrum of yeasts, fungi and bacteria.

    Advantages

    Approved preservative

Cosgard is one of the few preservatives approved by Ecocert and is therefore used worldwide in organic cosmetics and care products. Cosgard is free of parabens, formaldehyde and isothiazolone.

Can be used at higher temperatures

It is recommended to add Cosgard during the cooling phase of your formulation, but Cosgard can also be added at higher temperatures (up to 45 degrees Celsius).

Effective on a wide range of acidity levels

Cosgard protects at a pH value of 2 to 8, which gives you a lot of freedom with the rest of your ingredients. However, the preservative is less reliable from a pH of 7.

Protects against a wide range of intruders

This preservative protects against a wide range of yeasts, molds and bacteria, so you don't need to add other preservatives to your product. Only if you plan to make a final product that consists of 100% aqueous ingredients we recommend combining it with Leucidal SF Complete .

    How do you use it?

Use Cosgard as a preservative in your homemade cosmetics. The recommended dosage is 0.2% to 1% of the total weight of your final product. Add Cosgard during the cooling phase.

Cosgard consists of benzyl alcohol and dehydroacetic acid. Benzyl alcohol can cause an allergic reaction, so always test your final product (not the preservative itself) on a small patch of skin first and wait 24 to 48 hours to see if an allergic reaction occurs.
